226518. Sir Thomas Wroth
M.P.(114)
(336)(179) was born in 1518.
He died on Oct 9 1573. Sir Thomas Wroth studied at St. John's College, Cambridge,
but did not take a degree there, and Gray's Inn. He became a ward of the King
upon the death of his father in 1536 and the king gave the wardship to Thomas
Cromwell, the Lord Chancellor. In 1539 Sir Richard Rich (No.453038) paid Cromwell
three hundred marks for the right of disposing of Wroth in marriage and promptly
betrothed him to his daughter Mary.
The following year Wroth was granted livery of his lands and, in addition, Sir
Richard Rich secured for him several manors and lands that had belonged to the
now-fallen Cromwell and to the dissolved monasteries.
On Dec 18 1544 Wroth was elected to Parliament as one of the knights of the Shire
for Middlesex and the following year was named gentleman of the chamber to Edward,
Prince of Wales. He retained that post throughout Edward VI's brief reign and
was a particular favorite of the boy king. Indeed it is traditional that Edward
VI, wracked by tuberculosis, died in Sir Thomas's arms on Jul 6 1553.
He most likely represented Middlesex in the Parliament of 1547-1552, but the
returns for that Parliament have been lost. After the fall of Somerset, the Lord
Protector, Wroth was appointed one of the four principal gentlemen of the Privy
Chamber. In 1551 he was granted additional manors and the following year was
named Lord Lieutenant of Middlesex, jointly with Paget.
He signed the King's letters patent limiting the crown to Lady Jane Grey, but
took no part in Northumberland's insurrection to achieve that end. Committed
to the Tower on Jul 27 1553 after the collapse of the attempt, he was soon released.
When his arrest seemed imminent after the second rebellion of the Duke of Suffolk,
he fled to the continent, but obtained a license to do so, doubtless through
the efforts of his father-in-law. He remained abroad until the accession of Queen
Elizabeth I in 1558. He sat on numerous commissions during the early part of
her reign and sat for Middlesex in the Parliament of 1562-3. He was married
to Mary Rich.
