484. Humphrey Nichols
(59) died Probably Jun 23, 1764 in Newark,
New Jersey. While the date and place of Humphrey Nichol's birth are not known,
he apparently was brought up in the house of one of his uncles in Newtown, Long
Island, near what today is called Jamaica.
At some point he moved to Newark, then a small town on the edge of the Meadowlands.
He was evidently a carpenter and first appears in the records in 1738 when he
was paid ten shillings and sixpence for "making the gallows and setting
it up." He was engaged in building Trinity Church in Newark and the new
kitchen adjoining the courthouse, a job for which he received fifty-three pounds
in 1753. He was married to Abigail Wheeler.
