ELEVENTH GENERATION


1814. Major William Chittenden (236) was born about 1594. He died on Feb 1 1660/61 in Guilford, Connecticut. Major William Chittenden served in the English army in the Netherlands during the Thirty Years War, holding the rank of major.

He came to Guilford, Connecticut, in 1639, and was one of the founders of the church there on Jun 1 1639. he served as a representative to the General Court in twenty-seven sessions between 1643 and his death in 1661. He also served as a town magistrate. He was one of six people selected to purchase land from the Indians in Guilford and was one of four who received "full power and authority to act, order and dispatch all matters respecting the publick weal and civile government of the plantation until a church is gathered amonge us."

Because of his experience and rank, he was the chief military man in the town of Guilford.

His home lot was on the south side of Broad Street at the turn west of the green.

His estate was inventoried at 677 pounds 16 shillings and 7 pence. He was married to Joan Sheaffe about 1629 in England.

1815. Joan Sheaffe was born about 1614 in All Saints, Woodchurch, Kent, England. She died on Aug 16 1668 in Guilford, Connecticut. Children were:

child iii. Nathaniel Chittenden died in Jun 1691.
child iv. John Chittenden was born about 1643. He died in Apr 1716.

child vi. Hannah Chittenden was born on Nov 15 1649. She died young.
child vii. Hannah Chittenden was born on Apr 14 1652. She died on Sep 13 1674.
child viii. Joseph Chittenden was born on Apr 14 1652. He died on Jun 22 1652.
child ix. Deborah Chittenden was born on Dec 12 1653. She died on Sep 13 1674.
