George Calvert, 1st Lord Baltimore (1625-1632).

BORN: On 1578/79 at Kipling, in Yorkshire, England.

FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Leonard Calvert MOTHER: Grace Crossland.

MARRIED first wife Anne Mynne (1578-1621) on November 22, 1604 at St. Peter's Church, Cornhill in London.  Married second wife Joan after 1621.

CHILDREN. SONS: Cecilius Calvert (1605-1675); Leonard Calvert (ca. 1606-1647); George Calvert; Francis Calvert; Henry Calvert; John Calvert, and Philip Calvert (1626-1682, by second wife Joan). DAUGHTERS: Anne Calvert; Dorothy Calvert; Elizabeth Calvert; Grace Calvert; Helen Calvert.

PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: graduated Trinity College, Oxford, England, 1597. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION; Anglican; converted to Catholicism, 1625. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: knighted, 1617. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: member, Virgina Company, 1609-1620; member, New England Company, 1622.

PUBLIC CAREER.  Received the title, Baron of Baltimore, from James I, King of England, and thus became 1st Lord Baltimore in February 1625. Petitioned the King for a grant of land north of the Potomac River; charter for the province of Maryland sealed June 20, 1632. OUT OF COLONY SERVICE: private secretary to Sir Robert Cecil, 1606; controller of the policy of King James, 1606-12; clerk of the crown of assize and peace, County Clare, Ireland, 1606; M.P., Bossiney, Cornwall, England, 1609; clerk, Privy Council, 1613, 1619, 1625; principal secretary of state, 1619;; M.P., Yorkshire, England, 1621-24; baron of Baltimore, Ireland, 1625; member, Provisional Council for Management of Virginia.

WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: on April 15, 1632.
