Robert Henry Goldsborough (1779-1836)

Biography:

Born January 4, 1779, at "Myrtle Grove," near Easton, Maryland.  Son of Robert and Mary (Trippe) Goldsborough.  Educated by private tutors.  Attended St. John's College, Annapolis, B.A., 1796.  Episcopalian.  Married Henrietta Maria Nichols, January 16, 1800; ten children: Robert William, Willia, Charles Henry, Susan Elizabeth, Mary Caroline, Henrietta Maria, John McDowell, Mary McDowell, Eliza, and George Robins.  Died October 5, 1836, at "Myrtle Grove", near Easton, Maryland.  Buried at "Ashby," Talbot County.

Engaged in agricultural pursuits; lawyer; instrumental in establishing the Easton Gazette. Served in the 9th Calvary, Independent Light Dragoons, Maryland Militia; served as captain in May 1813 and achieved rank of major in February 1814. Member, House of Delegates, Talbot County, 1804 and 1825. Member, Board of Public Works of the Eastern Shore, 1825-28. U.S. Senator, 1813-19 and 1835-36. Presidential election, 4th District, 1832.
