William Fell Giles (1807-1879)

Biography:

Born April 8, 1807, in Harford County, Maryland.  Sone of Jacob Washington and Martha (Phillips) Giles.  Attended David W. Boyseau's private academy; Bel Air Academy; studied law under Judge John Purviance.  Admitted to the bar, 1829.  Married (1) Sarah Wilson; (2) Catharine Donaldson.  Five children: William F., Jr., Donaldson, Isabella, Catharine, Alfred B.  Presbyterian.  Died March 21, 1879, in Baltimore, Maryland.  Buried at Greenmount Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland.

General Assembly:
House of Delegates, Baltimore City, 1837-39. Democrat. Speaker pro tem, 1839.

Other public service:
Judge, U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, July 1853 until death in March 1879. U.S. House of Representatives, 4th District, 1845-47. Commissioner for Removing Free People of Color to Liberia.
