Caleb Clark Magruder (1839-1923)

Biography:

Born Caleb Clarke Magruder, Jr., January 9, 1839 in Prince George's County, Maryland.  Son of Caleb Clarke and Mary Sprigg (Balt) Magruder.  Attended Georgetown University; University of Virginia School of Law. Admitted to the bar, 1863.  Married Elizabeth Rice Nalle (d. September 4, 1922) in 1868.  Five sons: Caleb C. Magruder, III; Thomas N. Magruder; M. Hampton Magruder; Arthur H. S. Magruder; Dr. Ernest Pendleton Magruder (d. 1915). Died, June 2, 1923, in Baltimore, Maryland.  Buried in Magruder family graveyard in Prince George's County, Maryland.

Caleb Clarke Magruder was elected Clerk of the Maryland Court of Appeals on November 5, 1907, to serve a six year term. He was re-elected in 1913, and again in 1919. In 1867, Magruder served in the Maryland House of Delegates, representing Prince George's County. In 1881, he was the Democratic nominee for the Maryland State Senate from Prince George's County, but lost to his cousin, R. H. Magruder. C. C. Magruder was also a nominee in 1897 for associate judge of the Seventh Judicial Circuit, but was defeated by Judge George C. Merrick.  Entered into law partnership with Joseph S. Wilson.  Member and president, Board of Trustees of the Marlboro Academy. Town Commissioner. Member, Board of Managers of the House of Reformation.
