Biography:
Born at Edge Hill, near Princess Anne, Maryland, June 28, 1841 as John Woodland Crisfield, Jr. (name changed by act of legislature, 1843). Son of John Woodland Crisfield (1808-1897) and Julia Ethelinde (Page) Crisfield (d. 1841). Raised by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Anne Page (wife of Dr. Henry Page). Attended Anthony Bolmar School, West Chester, Pennsylvania; University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Studied law under his father and under William S. Waters. Admitted to the bar, 1864. Married Virginia Upshur Dennis, October, 1867; children: Henry, John D., Julia Ethelinde, Louisa Jane, Anne. Died January 7, 1913 in Princess Anne. Buried in Manokin Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Princess Anne.
Enlisted in the Confederate Army and participated in the Maryland Line at Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. Engaged in the practice of law with his father and after 1871 on his own in Somerset County. President, Savings Bank of Somerset County, Princess Anne. Delegate from Somerset County to the 1867 Constitutional Convention of Maryland. State's attorney, Somerset County, 1870-84. Presidential elector (Cleveland), 1888. U.S. Representative, March 1891-September 3, 1892 (resigned). Chief Judge, 1st Judicial District, appointed 1892, elected 1893, served until 1908. Associate judge, Maryland Court of Appeals, 1892-1908. President, Savings Bank of Somerset County, Princess Anne. Member, Knights of Pythias of Princess Anne. Member, Manokin Presbyterian Church, Princess Anne, 1906-1913.
