George W. Della (1908-1990)

Biography:

Born February 9, 1908, in Baltimore, Maryland. Attended Baltimore City public schools; Baltimore City College, 1927; University of Baltimore, B.A. in Business Administration, 1932. University of Baltimore School of Law, LL. B., 1935. Admitted to Maryland bar, 1936.  Married Agnes H. Mattare, 1936, at the Church of the Redeemer, Baltimore, Maryland. Three children: George W. Della, Jr., Mary Elizabeth (Della) Massing, and Howard R. Della. Died August 11, 1990, Baltimore, Maryland.

Appointed to the State Senate in 1939 by Governor Herbert R. O'Conor, Mr. Della continued as Democratic Senator from the Sixth District in Baltimore City until his retirement in 1963. During his Senate career, he chaired the Insurance and Loans Committee, the Judicial Proceedings Committee and the Legislative Council. Mr. Della served as President of the Senate from 1951-1955, and again from 1959-1963. In 1967, he was a member of the the State Constitutional Convention. Following his retirement from the Senate, Mr. Della worked as a lobbyist for the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company. He retired as their legislative council in 1985.

Active in a number of Mason organizations, Mr. Della was made potentate of the Boumi Temple of the Shrine in 1959. He was a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the Advent and the Baltimore Country Club. His directorships included the American Bankers Life Assurance Company of Florida and the industrial board of the South Baltimore General Hospital.
