D. Lindley Sloan (1874-1962)

Biography:

Born in Pekin, Allegany County, April 3, 1874.  Son of James M. Sloan and Ella Frederick Sloan.  Attended public schools in Lonaconing; Washington & Jefferson College, graduated 1892.  Studied law under his cousin, David W. Sloan of Cumberland.  Admitted to the Maryland Bar, 1895.  Married Marian DeWitt, February 22, 1917; son James DeWitt.  Resided in Cumberland.  Died May 13, 1962(6?).

Engaged in the private practice of law in Cumberland, 1895-1926.  Cumberland City Attorney, 1910-14.  Chief Judge, Allegany County Circuit Court, Fourth Judicial Circuit, 1926-44.  Associate Judge, Maryland Court of Appeals, 1926-44; Chief Judge, 1943-44.  President, Maryland Bar Association, 1932.  Vice-Chair, State War Ballot Commission, 1950-66.  Member, Cumberland Country Club; Masons; First Presbyterian Church of Cumberland.  Member and first President, Kiwanis Club.
