James Lawrence Bartol (1813-1887)

Biography:

Born in Havre de Grace, Harford County, June 4, 1813.  Son of George Bartol.  Studied under the Rev. Samuel Martin, D.D.  Graduated from Jefferson College, Pennsylvania in 1832.  Studied law under Otho Scott, Bel Air, Harford County.  Admitted to the Maryland Bar, 1836.  Married Miss Charbounier; at least one daughter.  Resided in Denton, Caroline County; Bal Air, Harford County; Baltimore City; and Baltimore County.  Died in Baltimore City, June 23, 1887.  Buried in Green Mount Cemetery, Baltimore City.

Practiced law in Denton, Caroline County, 1836-43.  Worked toward establishing and organizing the Denton Academy.  Practiced law in Baltimore City after 1845.  Associate Judge, Maryland Court of Appeals, 1857-67; Chief Judge, 1867-83.
