Levin Woolford (1819-1890)

Biography:

Born on an old family estate on the Manokin River near Princess Anne, Somerset County, 1819.  Son of Dr. John Woolford and Ann Irving Gillis Woolford.  Attended Washington Academy, Princess Anne.  Admitted to the bar when young.  Married a Miss Atkinson; one child Arthur G.   Married Annie E. Waters; children Elizabeth (Bessie) E., Lena B., Roger.  Owner of four farms in Somerset County:  "Pike's Peak," "Ghenston," "Goshen," and "Westerhand."  Died of a stroke in Princess Anne, September 30, 1890.  Buried in St. Andrew's Protestant Episcopal Churchyard.

Clerk of the Circuit Court of Somerset County, 1851-69.  Comptroller of the treasury, 1870-78.  State tax commissioner, 1878-90.  Co-founder in 1889 with son Roger and president, Savings Bank of Somerset County, Princess Anne.  Member and vestryman, St. Andrews Protestant Episcopal Church.  Delegate representing the Diocese of Easton in the general conventions of the Protestant Episcopal Church and delegate to the diocesan conventions.
