Samuel Snowden Maffit (1819-1864)

Biography:

Born March 18, 1819, probably in Cecil County.  Married Adelaide C. Beach on February 22, 1844; son Langdon R. died young.  Died of consumption on May 24, 1864 in Elkton, Cecil County.

Comptroller of the Treasury, 1862-64.  Maffit was a Unionist who opposed the abolition of slavery because he believed that abolition would cause a financial crisis.
