Biography:

Born December 22, 1807 in Maryland.  Married, Ariana Hopkins (12/18/1824-12/21/1871), January 11, 1844 in Talbot County.  Six sons:  Dr. James M.H. Bateman (11/9/1844-8/2/1907, m. Elizabeth Tench); Henry A. Bateman (1/8/1846-8/11/1914); John W. Bateman (c. 1847-July 1855); Charles Bateman (8/31/1850-8/30/1875); Joseph Franklin Bateman (2/27/1852-7/7/1899); Wilfred Bateman (1/17/1859-7/9/1907).  Died in Easton, Talbot County, November 30, 1892. Buried, Springhill Cemetery, Easton, Maryland.

Worked for the Centreville Times, the first newspaper published in Queen Anne's County, after 1824.  Editor, the Easton Star.  Clerk, Maryland Court of Appeals, Eastern Shore, 1842-1851. Comptroller of the Treasury, 1853-54.  Delegate from Talbot County to the 1867 Constitutional Convention of Maryland.
