Edgar Allan Poe (1871-1961)

Biography:

Born in Baltimore City, September 15, 1871.  Son of John Prentiss Poe (1836-1909) and Anne Johnson (Hough or Howard) Poe; grandson of Neilson Poe, a second cousin of poet Edgar Allan Poe.  Episcopalian.  Attended George G. Carey's school; Princeton College, B.A., 1891; University of Maryland, LL.B., 1893.  Married first wife Annye T. McCay (d. 1928); son Edgar Allan Poe, Jr.  Married second wife Marie Louise McIlhenny in 1932.  Resided in Baltimore until 1951 and in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, 1951-61.  Died in his home in Chestnut Hill on November 29, 1961.  Buried in St. Thomas Church Cemetery, Garrison Forest, Baltimore County.

Captain and quarterback of the Princeton College football team, 1889-90; named All-American in 1889.  Captain, Princeton College lacrosse team, c. 1889.  Engaged in the practice of law with his father under the name John P. Poe & Sons and with Bartlett, Poe & Claggett after 1916.  Deputy state's attorney and state's attorney for Baltimore City, 1900-07.  Deputy city solicitor and city solicitor, Baltimore, 1908-11.  Attorney general of Maryland, 1911-15.  Member, Phi Beta Kappa honor society.  Member, Green Spring Valley Hunt Club.  Member of the vestry, Old St. Paul's Church, Baltimore; member, St. Thomas Church in the Valley; member of the vestry, St. Paul's Church, Chestnut Hill.
