George R. Gaither (1858-1921)

Biography:

Born in Howard County, February 28, 1858.  Grandson of George Riggs Gaither, Sr. (1796-1875).  Son of George Riggs Gaither, Jr. (1831-1899) and Rebecca Harrison (Dorsey) Gaither (1833-1916).  Attended Howard County schools; Princeton College, graduated 1878; studied law in Baltimore, graduated 1880.  Episcopalian.  Married Fannie Imogen Granger; children George R. Gaither, Jr., H. Granger Gaither, and the future Mrs. W. L. Van Schiak.  Resided in Baltimore City.  Died of pneumonia in Catonsville, Baltimore County, October 17, 1921.  Buried in Green Mount Cemetery, Baltimore City.

Engaged in the private practice of law, Baltimore City; law partner with William Sheppard Bryan.  Switched from Democrat to Republican in 1892.  Attorney General of Maryland, 1899.  Baltimore City Commissioner, c. 1900.  Member and president, Second Branch City Council.  Republican candidate for governor of Maryland, 1907.  Co-founder, Belamy Club of Baltimore.  Member, Grace and St. Peter's Protestant Episcopal Church, Baltimore.
