Biography:

Born April 19, 1842 in Uniontown, Maryland.  Son of John and Catharine A. (Boyle) Roberts.  Attended Calvert College, New Windsor, Maryland, graduated 1861; Mt. St. Mary's College, Emmitsburg, Maryland, LL.D., 1875.  Studied law under William N. Hayden.  Admitted to the bar, 1864.  Married Annie E. Mathias on November 10, 1863; children John M., Dallas, Daniel, Charles B., Nannie, Mary Grace, Catharine A., Anne E. Louisa D., and Helen J.  Catholic.  Died September 10, 1899 in Westminster, Maryland.

Lawyer in Westminster, Maryland.  Director, Union National Bank; Westminster Gaslight Company; Mutual Fire Insurance Company, Westminster.  President, Westminster Water Works Company.  Manager, Maryland House of Corrections.  Presidential elector, 1868.  U.S. Representative, 2nd District, 1875-79; chair, Committee on Accounts, Committee on Commerce.  Delegate, Democratic National Convention, 1880.  Attorney General, 1883-87.  Associate judge, 5th judicial district, 1891.  Judge, Maryland Court of Appeals, 1892-99.
