Thomas Beale Dorsey (1780-1855)

Biography:

Born in Anne Arundel County, October 17, 1780. Son of John Worthington Dorsey and Comfort Worthington Dorsey. Attended St. John's College, Annapolis, graduated 1799; Studied law; admitted to the Maryland Bar, 1803. Married Milcah Goodwin; ten children (four sons and six daughters), born between 1809 and 1827. Probably Episcopalian. Resided near Ellicott City. Died December 26, 1855. Buried in St. John's Churchyard, Ellicott City, Howard County.

Lawyer. Planter. Member, House of  Delegates, Baltimore City, 1807. Member, Committee of Grievances & Courts of Justice; Committee on Laws to Expire; Committee to Consider and Report on the Communication from the Governors of New Jersey and Delaware; Committee to Examine Laws of Maryland Regulating the Election of Members of Congress. U.S. District Attorney for Maryland, 1811-1812. House of Delegates, Anne Arundel County, 1813; Republican. Unsuccessful candidate, House of Delegates, Anne Arundel County, 1814; Republican. Senatorial Elector, Anne Arundel County, 1816 and 1821; Republican. Attorney General of Maryland, 1822-1824. Chief Judge, First Judicial District, 1824-1831. Associate Judge, Maryland Court of Appeals, 1824-1848; Chief Judge, 1848-1851.
