Biography:
BORN: ca. 1618.
IMMIGRATED: by 1651, as a free adult, from Virginia.
RESIDED: "of the Clifts," Calvert County.
MARRIED by 1650 Sarah (1627-?), possibly the widow of Richard Young,
possibly the daughter of (first name unknown) Leigh. Her brother was
possibly Francis Leigh (?-1676). Sarah subsequently married by February
1674/75 John Hance.
CHILDREN. SON: Basil (1650-1688), a justice of Calvert County in 1685,
who married first, (first name unknown), daughter of John Hance, and
second, Sarah, daughter of Richard Marsham (?-1713). STEPSONS possibly
Richard Young (?-1665);
William Young. STEPDAUGHTER possibly Elizabeth Young.
PRIVATE CAREER.
EDUCATION: literate.
RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant, a Puritan.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE carpenter; planter.
PUBLIC CAREER.
LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Assembly, Patuxent
(Calvert County), 1654; Parliamentary Commission, 1655-1657/58; Lower
House, Calvert County, 1659/60.
OTHER PROVINCIAL OFFICE: justice. Provincial Court, 1654-1657/58.
LOCAL OFFICES: sheriff, Patuxent (Calvert), St. Mary'sand "Potomack" counties, 1655; justice, Calvert County, 1658-ca. 1660.
MILITARY SERVICE: captain. Calvert County Militia, 1655; commander, Herring Creek area, 1655.
STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: in 1660/61 fined 2,000 pounds of tobacco and barred from office and elections for 7 years for his participation in Fendall's Rebellion; released from his bond for good behavior in 1661.
WEALTH DURING LIFETIME.
LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 150 acres in Anne Arundel (later became Calvert) County.
