George Stricker  (1732-1810)

Biography:

Born 1732 in Winchester, Virginia to Swiss immigrants. Married Catherine Springer. Married (?) McMechen. Children: John (1759-1825), Mary, Elizabeth. Died 29 November 1810.

On January 3rd, 1776 George Stricker was commissioned Captain of the Ninth Company of Colonel William Smallwood's First Maryland Regiment. Being the light infantry company, Captain Stricker wished to equip his men with rifles. On 17 July 1776 Stricker was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and took over the German Battalion. Stricker's replacement, Benjamin Ford, led the Ninth Company into combat during the Battle of Long Island, where they sustained heavy causalties. Stricker resigned him commission on Aprily 29th, 1777 after General George Washington wrote a ltter to Governor Johnson declaring that Stricker's behavior made him undeserving of command.
