Joseph Nicholson, Jr. (?-1786)

Biography:

Born in Kent County, Maryland, date unknown. Son of Col. Joseph and Elizabeth Nicholson. Studied law in Annapolis during the mid-1750s. Admitted to the bar in Annapolis, Queen Anne's County, Cecil County, and Kent County. Anglican. Married Elizabeth Hopper on July 28, 1757; 5 children: Joseph Hopper Nicholson, William H. Nicholson, James Nicholson, Esther Nicholson Hindman Chambers, and Sarah Nicholson Niel (Noel). Resided in Anne Arundel, Kent, and Queen Anne's counties. Died in 1786, in Queen Anne's County, Maryland.

Lawyer and Gentleman. Sheriff, Queen Anne's County, 1760-1763. Clerk of Indictments, Cecil County, 1769. Member, Committee of Correspondence, Queen Anne's County, 1774. Member, Kent County Conventions, 1774-1775 (1st, 4th, and 5th only). Member, Council of Safety, Eastern Shore, 1776-1777 (4th and 5th only). Elected as a delegate to the Continental Congress, December 1777, but did not attend; resigned on December 22, 1777. Member, Maryland State Senate, Eastern Shore, 1776-1781.
