Biography:

BORN: in 1622, probably in England; second son.
IMMIGRATED: in 1637 as a minor with parents from Virginia.
RESIDED: in St. Mary's County; returned briefly to Virginia during Ingle's Rebellion. 

FAMILY BACKGROUND. 
FATHER. Richard Gardiner (?-ca. 1651), served in three unelected assemblies, but not a man of great wealth. 
MOTHER: Elizabeth.
BROTHERS: Richard (1616-?); John (1633-?).
SISTER: Elizabeth (1618-?), who married Richard Lusthead (?-1642).
MARRIED Elizabeth, daughter of  Richard Hatton; niece of Thomas Hatton (?-1654/55). She subsequently married Clement Hill (?-1708). Her brothers were William Hatton (?-1712); Richard. Her sisters were Mary, who married Zachary Wade (ca. 1627-1678); Elinor (1642-1725), who married first, Thomas Brooke (1632-1676), and second, Henry Darnall (ca. 1645-1711); and Barbara, who married James Johnson (?-?). CHILDREN. SONS: Richard Gardiner (?-1687), who married Elizabeth, daughter of Maj. John Ware, of Rappahannock, Virginia; John, who married Mary, daughter of William Boreman (ca. 1630-1709); Luke, who married Monica; and Thomas. 

PRIVATE CAREER. 
EDUCATION: literate.
RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Catholic.
SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: servant or apprentice to Thomas Copley in 1637; designated Gent, or by a military title after 1660.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: servant or apprentice, 1637; planter. 

PUBLIC CAREER.
LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, St. Mary's County, 1659/60 (elected to fill vacancy), 1661, 1662, 1671 (resigned after the 2nd session to become sheriff).
LOCAL OFFICES: justice, St. Mary's County, 1661-1666, 1668-1672 (quorum, 1664-1666, 1668-1672); sheriff, St. Mary's County, 1672-1674.
MILITARY SERVICE: lieutenant by 1660/61; captain, by 1664, still serving in 1670.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME.
LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: operated 4 separate plantations.

WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: by August 1674.
PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV, £632.18.0 sterling (including 3 slaves and 10 servants).
LAND: over 5,000 acres.
