CHAPTER 681
(Senate Bill 405)
AN ACT to add new Section 534N to Article 27 of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1971 Replacement Volume and 1972 Supplement), title "Crimes and
Punishments," subtitle "Sabbath Breaking," to follow immediately after Section
534M thereof, and to be under the new subtitle "Sunday Activities in
[[Allegany,]] Anne Arundel, [[Frederick, Washington]] and Calvert
Counties," limiting work or labor or the selling of merchandise or articles or
operation of specified places on certain days in [[Allegany County,]] Anne
Arundel County, [[Frederick County]] and [[Washington]] Calvert County;
excepting certain persons in [[Allegany County, Anne Arundel County,
Frederick County, Calvert County, and Washington County]] Anne Arundel
County and Calvert County observing a day other than Sunday as a day of rest
and recreation; further regulating business in [[Allegany County]], Anne
Arundel County, [[Frederick County]] and [[Washington]] Calvert County
regarding the work week; and providing injunctive relief and penalties for
violations.
SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That new Section 534N be and it is hereby added to Article 27 of
the Annotated Code of Maryland (1971 Replacement Volume and 1972
Supplement), title "Crimes and Punishments," subtitle "Sabbath Breaking," to
follow immediately after Section 534M thereof, and to be under the new subtitle
"Sunday Activities in [[Allegany,]] Anne Arundel, [[Frederick, Washington]]
and Calvert Counties," and to read as follows:
SUNDAY ACTIVITIES IN [[ALLEGANY COUNTY,]] ANNE ARUNDEL
COUNTY [[FREDERICK COUNTY, WASHINGTON COUNTY]]
AND CALVERT COUNTY
534N.
(A) IN [[ALLEGANY COUNTY,]] ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY,
[[FREDERICK COUNTY WASHINGTON COUNTY,]] AND CALVERT
COUNTY, EXCEPT AS SPECIFICALLY IN THIS SECTION OTHERWISE
PROVIDED, IT IS UNLAWFUL ON SUNDAY FOR ANY WHOLESALE
OR RETAIL ESTABLISHMENT TO CONDUCT BUSINESS FOR LABOR
OR PROFIT IN THE USUAL MANNER AND LOCATION OR TO
OPERATE ITS ESTABLISHMENT IN ANY MANNER FOR THE
GENERAL PUBLIC. IT SHALL NOT CAUSE, DIRECT, PERMIT, OR
AUTHORIZE ANY EMPLOYEE OR AGENT TO ENGAGE IN OR
CONDUCT BUSINESS ON ITS BEHALF ON SUNDAY.
(B) NOTWITHSTANDING ANY PROVISION OF THIS SECTION, THE
OPERATION OF ANY OF THE FOLLOWING TYPES OF RETAIL
ESTABLISHMENTS IS ALLOWED ON SUNDAY.
