Attorney shall have the same legal powers as the State's Attorney
to represent the State before grand juries and in the trial of
criminal proceedings.
(j) Dorchester County.
(3) The State's Attorney may from time to time, if deemed wise
or necessary, with the approval of the judge of the Circuit Court of
Dorchester County, appoint and fix the compensation of assistant
State's attorneys who shall present such cases to the Dorchester
County grand jury and perform such other acts and duties in relation
to the grand jury, Circuit and [People's Courts of] District Court
sitting in Dorchester County, as deemed necessary.
(p) Montgomery County.
(3) The State's Attorney, the deputy State's attorney and the
assistant State's attorneys, or any of them, shall present cases to the
grand jury and perform such other acts and duties in relation to the
grand jury as are necessary and proper. The salaries of the State's
Attorney and of the deputy and assistant State's attorneys include
such services as any of them perform before or in behalf of the
judges of the Circuit Court, [justices of the peace] or judges of the
[People's Court of the county] District Court in preliminary hear-
ings or trials in criminal cases.
(q) Prince George's County.
(2) The State's Attorney may appoint one deputy State's at-
torney and eighteen full-time assistant State's attorneys. The salary
of the deputy State's attorney shall be at such compensation, not
exceeding twenty-four thousand dollars ($24,000) per annum as the
State's Attorney may deem proper, to be paid by the county executive
and County Council. The salary of the eighteen full-time assistant
State's attorneys shall be at such compensation, not exceeding twenty
thousand dollars ($20,000) per annum each, as the State's Attorney
may deem proper, to be paid by the county on the certification of
the State's Attorney to the county executive and County Council. In
addition to the deputy State's attorney and the eighteen assistant
State's attorneys, the State's Attorney may appoint one principal
assistant State's attorney. The salary of the principal assistant
State's attorney shall be at such compensation, not exceeding twenty-
one thousand five hundred dollars ($21,500), as the State's Attorney
may deem proper, to be paid by the county executive and County
Council. The deputy State's attorney and the eighteen full-time as-
sistant State's attorneys, during their terms of office shall not, except
in connection with and in the performance of their duties as such
deputy and assistant State's attorneys, appear as counsel or repre-
sent any party professionally before any court, [magistrate,] board;
commission or agency of this State or any county or political
subdivision of this State. It is intended by the provisions herein
that the deputy State's attorney and the full-time assistant State's
attorneys shall not engage in the private practice of law in any
matter whatsoever.
(v) Washington County.
(4) The deputy State's attorney and the assistant State's attorney
shall serve at the pleasure of the State's Attorney. Under the direction
of the State's Attorney or in the absence of the State's Attorney, the
