under the provisions of these regulations, shall be designed and of a
type suitable for the voltage and current available and be specifically
approved for the purpose of the Fire Marshal before installation.
They shall be tested and listed by the Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc.,
for fire alarm services before submission to the Fire Marshal.

83-37. Fire Bells or Horns for Other Uses Prohibited.

Private fire alarm systems shall not be used for any other pur-
pose than as a fire alarm or as an alarm to evacuate the building.

83-38. Type System Required.

Any building, in which a local fire alarm system is required, shall
be equipped with an approved electrically supervised non-coded fire
alarm system of the vibrating bell or horn type, with not less than
one approved non-supervised annunciator or an approved electrically
supervised coded fire alarm system; except that a small installation
requiring not more than four bells may be of the non-supervised,
non-coded, vibrating bell or horn type system, without an annunciator.

All elementary and secondary school buildings, regardless of
height, number of stories, or grade area, may be equipped with an
approved non-coded local fire alarm system of the electrically super-
vised horn type incorporating an annunciator panel to indicate the
area in which the striking station or stations have been actuated.

83-39. Separate Systems in Fire Zones.

Separate local alarm systems may, by special permission of the
Fire Marshal, be installed in large buildings containing two or more
wings with corridors or hallways cut off or isolated by approved fire
resistive doors or walls, or, in two or more buildings with connect-
ing corridors or hallways which contain approved fire resistive doors
separating or isolating fire zones.

83-40. Occupied Basements.

For the purpose of this Article in determining fire alarm require-
ments, any occupied basement will be considered to be a story.

DIVISION 3. Source of Power and Installation of Wiring.
83-41. Source.

Local alarm systems shall, in general, be supplied by a 3-wire
source of 115/230 for 120/208 nominal voltage, A.C., with the bells
connected to both the grounded and one outside conductor for coded
systems, and the disarrangement signals connected to the grounded
and other outside conducter of the 3-wire source.

(a) Connect to emergency lighting system. In buildings with
an emergency lighting system, the fire alarm system shall be con-
nected to the emergency lighting system on the line side of the switch
used for the normal control of emergency lights.
