pass a physical examination satisfactory to the board of trustees shall
become a member of the retirement system as a condition of employ-
ment. Any person who enters the regular part-time employment
of the employer after June 30, 1971 may become a member of the re-
tirement system at any time within the first two years of his employ-
ment, but if he has not previously joined must become a member at the
end of that period as a condition of employment, provided, such per-
son shall pass a physical examination satisfactory to the board of trus-
tees.
Any person who is in the part-time employment of the em-
ployer on July 1, 1965, may, within a period of six months thereafter,
become a member as of that date, unless such person shall file with
the board of trustees on a form prescribed by the board a notice of
his election not to be covered in the membership of the system and a
duly executed waiver of all present and prospective benefits which
would otherwise inure to him on account of his participation in the
retirement system. Any such person who fails to become a member
may thereafter apply for and be admitted to membership, but no credit
for past service shall be granted unless he becomes a member before
January 1, 1966. No person in part-time employment shall receive
credit for service prior to July 1, 1965; except, that any such person
in service subsequent to January 1, 1964, and becoming a member be-
fore January 1, 1966, shall receive membership service credit for all
service rendered between January 1, 1945, and the date of his becom-
ing a member; provided, that he pays to the system by a single pay-
ment or an increased rate of contribution, as may be approved by
the board of trustees, the contributions with interest that would have
been paid had he been a member between January 1, 1945, and the
date of his becoming a member.

In computing benefits, each calendar year of membership service
shall be that fractional portion of such year which shall be equal to
the portion of time worked in each year as related to the standard
county work year, and earnable compensation shall mean the full
rate of compensation that would be payable to such part-time em-
ployee if he worked full time.

Section 20-11. Same—Member entering armed services.

Anything in this article to the contrary notwithstanding, if any
member enters directly into the armed forces of the "United States
by reason of induction under any applicable Selective Service Act, by
reason of the activation of a reserve unit of which he may be a mem-
ber or as the result of his initial enlistment therein
and does not with-
draw his contributions, and if he returns to service as an employee
within one year after having been honorably discharged from the
armed forces or separated therefrom under honorable conditions,
membership service credit shall be granted by the board of trustees
for the period of such service in the armed forces, provided the mem-
ber elects to make up his contributions for the period of his service in
the armed forces within a reasonable period after his re-employment,
such contributions to be based on his rate of earnable compensation
at the time his service in the armed forces commenced. Any employee
