Marvin Mandel, Governor                          1835

Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That it hereby
requests the Department of Natural Resources to study the problem
of availability and continuing supply of mineral resources in Mary-
land vis a vis other land uses, particularly in relation to the rapid
spread of urban areas; and to study the parallel problem of ways
to minimize the effects of surface mining on the environment; and
be it further

Resolved, That the Department of Natural Resources report the
results of this investigation to the Legislative Council by October
1, 1971 together with any suggestions it may have with regard to
new legislation; and be it further

Resolved, That a copy of this Joint Resolution be sent to the Sec-
retary of the Department of Natural Resources.

(House Joint Resolution 23)

House Joint Resolution requesting the Maryland State Board of
Censors to recommend that previews of restricted or limited
audience films not be shown to general audiences in motion picture
theaters.

Whereas, The Motion Picture Association of America has estab-
lished a rating system for ascertaining the suitability of motion
pictures for youthful audiences which is commonly used in Mary-
land; and

Whereas, Parents and adult citizens of Maryland rely upon the
recommendations of the Motion Picture Association of America in
selecting suitable motion pictures and theaters for children to at-
tend; and

Whereas, The rating symbols used by the Motion Picture Associa-
tion of America and recognized by parents are as follows:

(G) Suggested for general audiences
(GP) Parental discretion suggested

(R) Restricted—persons under 17 must be accompanied by
parent or adult

(X) Persons under 17 not admitted
and;

Whereas, Previews of restricted (R) and limited audience (X)
films are sometimes shown as coming attractions to general audi-
ences; now, therefore, be it
