JOINT RESOLUTIONS
No. 1
(House Joint Resolution 112)
House Joint Resolution ratifying a proposed amendment to the Con-
stitution of the United States extending the right to vote to citizens
eighteen years of age or older.
Whereas, The 92nd Congress of the United States has passed a
Joint Resolution proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the
United States extending the right to vote to citizens of the United
States who are eighteen years of age or older; and
Whereas, This Joint Resolution passed the Senate of the United
States on March 10, 1971, passed the House of Representatives of
the United States on March 23, 1971, and now has been submitted
to a vote of the States; and
Whereas, The State of Maryland wishes to ratify this proposed
amendment to the Constitution of the United States which, when
ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several states,
shall be valid to all intents and purposes as part of the Constitution
of the United States, viz:
"Article ................
"Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States, who are
eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged
by the United States or by any State on account of age.
"Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this Article
by appropriate legislation." Now, therefore be it
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the foregoing
proposed amendment to the Constitution of the United States is
ratified by the State of Maryland to all intents and purposes as a part
of the Constitution of the United States; and be it further
Resolved, That the Governor of the State of Maryland is requested
to forward authentic copies of this Resolution, under the Great Seal
of the State of Maryland, to the Secretary of State of the United
States, to the presiding officer of the Senate of the United States, to
the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States,
and to the Administrator of General Services of the United States.
