56. [POLICE FORCE; APPLICATIONS AND EXAMINATIONS.
On the fifteenth day of August, 1912, and as often thereafter as there
may be a vacancy to be filled in the police force, hereinafter provided for,
the said board shall hold a preliminary examination at the City Hall for
applicants for policemen. Notice of any and all preliminary examinations
for policemen shall be given by advertisement in at least one newspaper
published in the City of Cambridge, at least ten days before such exami-
nation; said notice shall state the time and place of said examination and
the prerequisites for taking the same. Every applicant for policeman
must be of good moral character, not addicted to the use of alcoholic
liquors, must be at least five feet eight inches in height, must weigh not
less than one hundred fifty pounds, must be between the ages of twenty-
five and thirty-five years, and must be able to read and write a legible
hand, and show a fair knowledge of the rules of the said Board of Police
Commissioners. All examinations for policemen must be in writing and
the Board reserves the right to reject any or all applications if in their
sole discretion any applicant would not be a suitable member of the Police
Force notwithstanding the fact that he may have passed the physical and
mental examination. The said board shall examine the papers submitted
by each applicant and grade them, taking into account in such grading
the mental and physical qualifications of each applicant, and also his fitness
for a police officer. Any applicant who has obtained an average of sixty
per cent in the preliminary examination aforesaid and has passed a satis-
factory physical examination may be appointed as a probationary officer
for the City of Cambridge, with all the powers and duties of a regular
police officer, for a period of six (6) months, unless said Board of Police
Commissioners, in its discretion, shall dismiss such probationary officer
during said period because of his lack of the necessary requirements and
qualifications for a probationary officer, or until he shall be given a final
mental examination by the said Board of Police Commissioners, and upon
passing said mental examination, with an average of sixty per cent, and
also passing a satisfactory physical examination, said probationary officer
may be appointed a regular police officer of the City of Cambridge to serve
as may be now provided by law.
The Board of Police Commissioners shall have discretion to waive the
aforesaid requirement that an applicant shall be below the age of thirty-
five years.] The Commissioners of Cambridge shall be responsible for the
establishment and maintenance of a police force for the City of Cam-
bridge to be governed by Ordinances as may be from time to time enacted
by The Commissioners of Cambridge.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution shall
become effective November 18, 1969.
