(b)    The gross weight of any motor vehicle or combination of
vehicles may not exceed the following weights:

Vehicles or combinations with not more than

three axles .............................................................. 55,000 pounds

Vehicles or combinations with four axles.................. 65,000 pounds

Vehicles or combinations with five axles AS PRO-
VIDED FOR IN SECTION 3-808(B) OF THIS
ARTICLE ................................................................ 73,280 pounds

(c)    Trailers equipped with metal tires bearing a gross load in
excess of 6,000 pounds shall not be allowed on state highways; pro-
vided nothing contained in this part makes unlawful the registration
or operation upon the highways of this state of any commercial motor
vehicle or passenger bus, now lawfully registered in this State.

§ 14-110. Registration of vehicles according to permissible gross
weight.

(a)    The department, upon registering any truck, truck tractor,
trailer or semitrailer under the laws of this state, or any bus for the
transportation of 10 or more persons, may require such information
and may make investigations or tests necessary to enable it to
determine whether the vehicle may safely be operated upon the high-
ways in compliance with all the provisions of this subtitle. It shall
register the vehicle for a permissible gross weight not exceeding the
limitations set forth in this subtitle.

(b)    The commissioner shall insert in the registration card issued
for the vehicle the gross weight for which it is registered, and if it
is a motor vehicle to be used for propelling other vehicles he shall
separately insert the total permissible gross weight of the motor
vehicle and other vehicles to be propelled by it. He may also issue a
special plate with the gross weight or weights stated thereon, which
shall be attached to the vehicle and displayed thereon at all times. It
shall be unlawful for any person to operate any vehicle or combina-
