492 ADDRESSES AND STATE PAPERS

to merit a curfew would be something that I'd have to check into, and
I promise you I will check into it. While we're talking about Cam-
bridge, I want to point out that I received a report yesterday from Mr.
Chaffinch who is the chairman of the Community Relations Committee
in Cambridge, which indicates that they are making substantial prog-
ress in the community. As you know, the committee began working on
solutions almost immediately. They raised $1, 700 shortly after the
disturbance to feed and clothe those who were left homeless, but now
the long-range progam is beginning to take shape. For example, a
large national company which we expect to locate in the area will
produce a very large number of permanent jobs, we think maybe as
many as 800 job opportunities in that area. In addition to that, the
picture of low-cost housing continues to improve. One builder has
already started construction on 17 homes and has an option on prop-
erty to extend them to 150. Also, applications have been made to
the FHA for 220 rent-supplement housing units. And the FHA also
has an application to construct 150 low-cost homes. The Housing
Authority has also been given approval to proceed with 75 units at
the present time. Now this is a rather dramatic breakthrough in an
area of major concern, and I certainly want to commend this biracial
committee under Mr. Chaffinch for sticking with a very tough prob-
lem and for showing some progress that apparently is taking place
in Cambridge.

Q. Governor, I know that you are wearing keyboard cuff links. Does
that have any significance?

A. Somebody gave me these because I like to fool around with a
piano occasionally, and I guess I just pulled them out of the box
this morning.

Q. Governor, do you play well?
A. No; not well, but loud.

Q. Are you going to plan a public auction of your land by the Bay

bridge next week?

A. No, but I would feel greatly relieved if a member of the media
would buy that.

Q. Governor, on your interest in the city of Annapolis, the An-
napolis administration wants to buy your property along the water-
front and remake the whole section a shopping mall and a parking
site. Has anyone discussed this with you or do you have any opinion
on it?
