THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, the party of Lincoln and Grant and of the majority of the Union, was considered among blacks to be the party which had come to their defense to fight slavery. Take a look at the newspaper accounts of the parade and you will see numerous references to "eternal allegiance to the Republican party." Is it any wonder, then, that some of the most prominent people in the discussion of the Fifteenth Amendment were Republicans?
