STONEWALL JACKSON'S GRAVE – We
observe that a movement has been set on foot by the
survivors of General Jackson's staff to erect an appropriate
monument over his grave at Lexington, Virginia. This
movement will commend itself to his admirers among
whom there are many who were not of his army.
Immediately after the death of the general a large fund was
raised by the troops of his corps for this worthy purpose but
was deposited in bank and lost – The present undertaking
meets with the approval and cooperation of Mrs. Jackson
who it is said has offered to devote all she can of her small
fortune to its accomplishment. True it needs no marble to
perpetuate the fame of her husband, but it is fitting that the
spot of earth which holds his ashes should be endurably
marked for posterity. This movement is not confined to ex-
soldiers contributions will be gladly received from all his
friends and admirers. People in Maryland or elsewhere
North who desire to assist are requested to send their
subscriptions to Major H Kyd Douglas, at Hagerstown –
Among others a gentleman in New York has already
tendered his check for $l00 – Hagerstown (Md) Free
