Celebrating Rights and
Responsibilities
Baltimore & the Fifteenth Amendment, May 19, 1870
An Interactive Historical Investigation by David Troy © 1996

THE BALTIMORE AMERICAN leaned more towards a Republican viewpoint than the Sun. The American's article is almost twice as long as the article appearing in the Sun, and it is also more sympathetic in its rhetoric and descriptions. Notice also that C.C. Fulton is the publisher of The American and that he is the first "distinguished guest" mentioned in the American article. He is also a vice president of the meeting, and there is a club which bears his name. The parade would have passed in front of the American offices at 128 Baltimore Street.
Compare the reporting of Frederick Douglass' speech in the Sun and the American.
