Celebrating Rights and
Responsibilities
Baltimore & the Fifteenth Amendment, May 19, 1870
An Interactive Historical Investigation by David Troy © 1996

TWO BALTIMORE NEWSPAPERS printed accounts of the ratification celebration on the day after the parade. The Baltimore Sun and the Baltimore American and Commercial Advertiser had front page articles about the parade. Read these for yourself. See which one is longer and more descriptive. Try to figure out which, of the two, leaned more towards the Republican party. Once again, we see a dichotomy in Maryland -- that it, like the Nation, was of two minds when it came to the subject of slavery.
