Celebrating Rights and
Responsibilities
Baltimore & the Fifteenth Amendment, May 19, 1870
An Interactive Historical Investigation by David Troy © 1996

We are facing east towards the monument, standing on Monument street. The house with four-columns on the right is the Enoch Pratt Mansion. Compare this scene with a current photograph of the same scene. Notice the liberties the artist has taken in drawing the monument taller, also.

Also consider another point: we believe the parade traveled west on Madison Street, not on Monument Street. The Pratt Mansion and its relative position to the monument very definitely indicate that we are seeing a procession on Monument street, not Madison. Perhaps the parade broke into two sections, one of which traveled on Madsion street, and the other of which traveled on Monument street. See what the newspaper accounts say.
