The 1899 benefaction of Mary and Ellen Irwin honoring their brother, George Carter Irwin, made it possible for the Peabody Institute to acquire works by such distinguished American painters as Winslow Homer, George Innes and Childe Hassam. Fisher Boys was purchased by the trustee's Gallery of Art Committee in 1911.
