Thomas Doughty was one of the first American painters to devote himself to landscapes. Susquehanna River came to the Peabody Collection as part of the Charles James Madison Eaton Collection in 1893. Eaton was an ardent promoter and patron of Maryland artists, and his contributions to the Peabody Collection were significant.
