Cecilia Marshall, widow of Thurgood Marshall, cuts the ribbon officially
opening the Thurgood Marshall Tribute, along with Governor Robert L. Ehrlich,
Jr. and members of the Thurgood Marshall Tribute Committee.
Dr. Larry S. Gibson, principle organizer of the Thurgood Marshall Tribute,
gives a tour of the exhibit about Marshall's life and work to Mrs. Marshall,
Governor Ehrlich, and Lt. Governor Michael Steele.
Mrs. Marshall and sculptor Antonio Tobias Mendez with the bronze bust of
Thurgood Marshall installed as part of the Thurgood Marshall Tribute.
The bronze bust of Marshall is based on Toby Mendez's full length sculpture
that was installed in 1996 as part of the Thurgood Marshall Memorial
in Annapolis. The bust was commissioned by the Thurgood Marshall Tribute
Committee and funded with donations from private individuals to the Friends
of the Maryland State Archives. It will become a part of the permanent inventory
of the state owned art collections managed by the Maryland Commission on
Artistic Property.
