ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS - MARYLAND STATE ARCHIVES ELECTRONIC CLASSROOM COOPERATIVE

CONTRIBUTIONS

The Maryland State Archives will provide Anne Arundel County Public Schools with consultant services to establish and use interactive electronic classrooms. The school system will receive four digital Documents for the Classroom sets on CD-ROM. The Archives will conduct staff development sessions for Anne Arundel County teachers on the use of the social studies materials and computers in the classroom.

Anne Arundel County Schools' technical staff and systems operators will have the opportunity to train with Archives' staff when setting up the model classroom at the Archives. They will have a hands-on opportunity to deploy the hardware and establish the local network connections. Anne Arundel County Schools will supply ICLAS software, compatible with Novell 3.1X. It should be noted that this version of Novell does not bridge IBM and MacIntosh platforms as does Novell 4.1 which the Archives currently uses. Specifications for implemention at the Archives.

Anne Arundel County will provide eight specified client workstations with the necessary software to the Archives until the beginning of the 1996-97 school year. Anne Arundel County Schools will then maintain electronic classrooms in various high schools with their own personnel.

Using the model classroom established by Anne Arundel County Schools at the Hall of Records, Archives' staff will conduct one content lesson on each of the document packets for up to sixteen teachers. Participants will be expected to have basic Internet and Windows operating skills. Teachers will be introduced to the historical themes that the documents relate as well as to details about the documents themselves. One additional day of instruction will address HyperText Mark-up Language (HTML) and the development of electronic lesson plans. The Archives' Director of Education will visit three schools where the teachers are using the electronic classroom and the Archives' materials.
