Represented John Merryman with George M. Gill which eventually lead to Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney to issue his opinion, Ex parte Merryman, 17 Fed. Cas. 144 (1861) that the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War was unconstitutional.
