School Teachers of Early Maryland

Piper, Michael, AA, was teaching by 1721 when Michael Piper,
present Register and School-master of Annapolis, petitioned the vestry
for a small quantity of ground where his dead lie buried at the east end
of the church. The petition was allowed and he is to have seven square
feet of ground (SAVP: MHM 7:79). The Minister, vestry, and church wardens
decided that the schoolmaster of Annapolis and the charity boys on the
foundation of the school in Annapolis, be permitted, during the vacancy
of the Asssembly, constantly to sit in the front seat joining to the back
door until such time as further provision can be made for them (SAVP: MHM
7:80).

Piper, Michael, on 7 Nov 1720 was chosen register of St. Anne's Parish
in place of John Talbot (SAVP 7:74). (See PMHB 61:370n). On 5 Dec
1721: Michael Piper, present Register and School-master of Annapolis, petitioned
the vestry for a small quantity of ground where his dead lie buried at
the east end of the church. The petition was allowed and he is to have
seven square feet of ground (SAVP: MHM 7:79). The Minister, vestry,
and church wardens decided that the schoolmaster of Annapolis and the charity
boys on the foundation of the school in Annapolis, be permitted, during

(SAVP: MHM 7:80). On 2 July 1723 Mrs. Piper and Elizabeth Piper
were allowed to sit in the 2nd Public Pew (SAVP: MHM 7:172).

Financial Status: On 10 Jan 1724 Michael Piper was to be allowed
500 lbs. tob. For last year's service as clerk of the vestry, 50 lbs. For
transcribing the new act of the Assembly against profaning the Sabbath,
and another 150 lbs. For transcribing the two tables hanging in the Church
One the Table of Marriages, and the other the Table of Donations of several
gentlemen towards the public buildings of the city (SAVP: MHM 7:178).
Michael Piper made a payment to the estate of Daniel Thompson, innholder
of AA Co., in the account filed 7 July 1726 (MDAD 7:388). He was a debtor
of Edward Smith, listed in the administration account filed 19 July 1726
(MDAD 8:474). He was also listed as a debtor in the account filed 20 Dec
1729 of Hughh Kennedy (MDAD 10:125).

Background: He and his wife came to the colonies about 1717,
and by 23 Oct 1718 he was in Philadelphia (V. L. Auld cites W. Edwin Auld
Remly, Ten Generations in America, and Lambeth Palace Library Papers).

Family: He married Rosanna Button in Ireland. Rose Piper, wife of
Michael Piper, Register of St. Anne's Parish, died 29 Nov 1724 in her 35th
year (AACR:92). Michael and Rose were the parents of (AACR:88,
91, 92): JOHN, b. c1711, d. 8 Sep 1721; and ROSE ANNA, b. 22 Dec 1723,
bapt. 29 Dec 1723 (godparents were Capt. Thomas Larkin, Elizabeth Beale,
and Mrs. Transum).

Rosanna Piper, daughter of Michael and Rosanna, married 1st, in 1745 Howes
Goldsborough, who died 1746. Rosanna m. 2nd, in 1747, James Auld. They
lived in DO Co., and then moved to halifax Co., NC (Letter from V. L. Auld).
