Introduction

At the request of Delegate Casper R. Taylor, Jr., Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates, the Maryland State Archives is pleased to present the 2001 Speaker's Society Directory.  The following biographical sketches and accompanying photographs are drawn primarily from the historical collections of the Maryland Manual.  They represent the state of the biographical file at the time a member of the Society left state-wide public service, and are not intended as current biographies, except for recently deceased members, and anyone currently in State service as reflected in the web-based Maryland Manual On-Line.  The photographs are the most recent available from the collection of Maryland Manual photography [MSA SC 1198].

The directory is also available on line at the Maryland State Archives web site: mdsa.net.  The profiles can be accessed in electronic form from the Former Delegates page of the Manual On-Line and by name using the Search the Archives option on the Maryland State Archives home page (mdsa.net).  This year's publication has a list of all former Speakers of the House from 1650 through the present session.  In addition, in an effort to pay tribute to recently deceased members of the Society, the In Memoriam section recognizes the members lost since the last meeting.  Future editions can encompass anyone inadvertently missed, and the Archives would be grateful if any omissions were brought to our attention.

This volume was prepared by the staff of the Maryland State Archives, including intern Jennifer Cupani of Middlebury College, Research Archivist Karen Dunaway, Archives Webmaster and Editor for Electronic Publications Lynne MacAdam, and Director of Biographical Research, Emily Oland Squires.  The Archives welcomes volunteers and financial support for student interns to expand and improve upon what we have begun.  Any contributions are tax deductible and will be applied directly to the specific purposes for which they are given as provided for in the legislation creating the State Archives Fund enacted in 1993.

Finally, the Archives would like to encourage members of the Speaker's Society to continue updating our biographical files.  Please do not hesitate to contact Emily Oland Squires, regarding any contributions, including family information, photographs and office-related memorabilia, that would provide a more complete and accurate account of members' careers.  She may be reached at 410-260-6443 or emilyo@mdarchives.state.md.us.  We would hope that the Speaker's Society would look upon the collection of additional biographical information about its members, and the preparation of biographies in electronic form on the web, as an achievable and worthy goal.  How well we remember those who represented us and what they did is closely tied to how highly government is valued and the degree to which the record of government can be improved.
