DESCRIPTION : THIS COLORED MAP, WHICH APPEARED IN CRAM'S UNIVERSAL ATLAS, GEOGRAPHICAL, ASTRONOMICAL, AND HISTORICAL...., CHICAGO: 1898, 103, IS ALMOST IDENTICAL IN APPEARANCE AND LAYOUT TO ONE BY GEORGE F. CRAM, WHICH WE BELIEVE WAS IN AN ATLAS PUBLISHED BY PEOPLE'S PUBLISHING CO. OF CHICAGO. SEE PHILLIPS # 6231. ON THE VERSO OF THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN IS A "MAP OF WASHINGTON" PAGE # "106". ON THE REVERSE SIDE OF THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN IS ONE OF TWO PAGES OF A MAP OF PHILADELPHIA. THE ONLY NOTABLE DIFFERENCE IN THIS MAP AND THE 1886 VERSION IS THAT THE EARLIER RELEASE HAD NUMBERS AND LETTERS ONLY IN THE TOP AND LEFT MARGINS, WHEREAS THE MAP DESCRIBED HAS THEM ON ALL FOUR SIDES. THE "REFERENCE TO FIGURES" TABLE HAS THE IDENTICAL REFERENCES. SEE MAP # 386C5.

IN ADDITION, THIS MAP IS IDENTICAL AS TO SIZE, LAYOUT, ETC. TO ONE IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION DATED 1893. SEE MAP # 393C7.

DATA IS FROM EXAMINATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS MAP IS SIMILAR IN LAYOUT TO ONE DONE BY GEORGE F. CRAM IN 1886 (SEE MAP # 386C5), ALTHOUGH IT IS OF A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT SIZE AND IT HAS NUMBERS AND LETTERS IN THE RIGHT AND BOTTOM BORDERS THAT THE 1886 VERSION DOES NOT HAVE. IN ADDITION, THE COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF A SIMILAR MAP FROM THE CRAM'S UNRIVALED FAMILY ATLAS OF THE WORLD INDEXED, DATED 1893. SEE MAP # 393C7. PRESUMABLY THE MAP MUST ALSO HAVE APPEARED IN MANY OTHER OF THE CRAM ATLASES.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COPY OF THIS MAP WITH THE MAP OF WASHINGTON ATTACHED. IT IS A PART OF A 4 PAGE SECTION CONTAINING, IN ADDITION TO THE BALTIMORE AND WASHINGTON MAPS A TWO PAGE MAP OF PHILADELPHIA ON THE REVERSE SIDE. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF U015-T AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-151. THE COLLECTION HAS COPY OF THE SIMILAR 1886 MAP WITH AN ACQ. # OF U020-N AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-150. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A GOOD COPY OF THE SIMILAR 1893 MAP WITH AN ACQ. # OF BB023-DUD* AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-656(4).
