DESCRIPTION : THIS SKETCH OF THE TRIANGULATION CONNECTING NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY, PENNSYLVANIA, MARYLAND, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA AND THE OHIO SHOWS HOW THE TRIANGULATION WAS TIED TOGETHER. IT DIFFERENTIATES BETWEEN PRIMARY, SECONDARY AND TERTIARY TRIANGULATION. WHILE NOT IMPORTANT TO A CHESAPEAKE-MARYLAND COLLECTION, THIS SKETCH DOES SHOW THAT THE WORK DONE ON THE CHESAPEAKE BAY WAS PIVOTAL TO THE EXTENSION OF THE TRIANGULATION WESTWARD AND SOUTHWARD. THE SUPERINTENDENT REPORTED THAT MR. A.T. MOSMAN EXAMINED A COUNTRY CUT INTO DEEP RAVINES THROUGH WHICH FLOW THE NUMEROUS SMALL STREAMS EMPTYING INTO THE OHIO RIVER AND WITH THE RANGES OF HILLS BETWEEN THESE STREAMS OF UNIFORM HEIGHT AND HEAVILY WOODED EITHER WITH LARGE TIMBER OR COVERED WITH A SECOND GROWTH OF SMALL TREES AND BUSHES. THESE WERE SO THICKLY CROWDED AS TO BE VERY DIFFICULT TO PENETRATE AND WERE NOT HIGH ENOUGH TO AFFORD A VIEW OF THE COUNTRY FROM THEIR TOPS. MUCH TIME WAS NECESSARILY SPENT IN SEARCHING FOR STATIONS THAT COULD BE INTERVISIBLE, AND AS THE ROADS WERE FEW AND VERY ROUGH, TRAVEL IN WAGONS OR ON HORSEBACK WAS VERY SLOW AND ALMOST ALL DETAILED EXAMINATIONS WERE MADE ON FOOT. THE SKETCH WAS INCLUDED IN THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE U.S. COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE WORK DURING THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING WITH JUNE, 1883, WASHINGTON: U.S. COAST & GEODETIC SURLVEY, 1884.

DATA IS FROM THE USC&GS ANNUAL REPORT FOR FISCAL 1883 AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS SKETCH IS AN UPDATED AND REISSUED VERSION OF ONE THAT FIRST APPEARED IN THE USCGS ANNUAL REPORT OF FISCAL 1881-2 (SEE MAP # 382U6). THE MOST CONSPICUOUS CHANGE IS THE DATE IN THE TITLE. ALSO, SHADED SURFACES NOW INDICATE RESURVEYS. FURTHER REVISIONS AND REPUBLICATIONS OCCURRED IN FISCAL 1883-4 (SEE MAP # 384U6), AND FISCAL 1884-5 (SEE MAP # 385U5) AND FISCAL 1885-6 (SEE MAP # 386U5).

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD COPY ON THIN PAPER. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF B014-DHH AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-639. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS COPIES OF THE 1882 STATE WITH A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-636, THE 1884 STATE WITH A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-637, THE 1885 STATE WITH A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399- 640, AND THE 1886 STATE WITH A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-635. ALL STATES HAVE ACQ. #S OF B014-DHH.
