DESCRIPTION : THIS SKETCH OF THE TRIANGULATION CONNECTING NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY, PENNSYLVANIA, MARYLAND, VIRGINIA AND WEST VIRGINIA AND THE OHIO SHOWS HOW THE TRIANGULATION WAS TIED TOGETHER. IT DIFFERENTIATES BETWEEN PRIMARY, SECONDARY AND TERTIARY TRIANGULATION. WHILE NOT IMPORTANT TO A CHESAPEAKE-MARYLAND COLLECTION, THIS SKETCH DOES SHOW THAT THE WORK DONE ON THE CHESAPEAKE BAY WAS PIVOTAL TO THE EXTENSION OF THE TRIANGULATION WESTWARD AND SOUTHWARD. THE WORK WAS SUPERVISED BY A.T. MOSMAN. IT WAS INCLUDED IN THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE U.S. COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE WORK DURING THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING WITH JUNE, 1882, WASHINGTON: U.S. SENATE, 1883, AS SKETCH NO. 4.

DATA IS FROM THE FISCAL 1882 USC&GS ANNUAL REPORT AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS SKETCH WAS UPDATED AND REISSUED IN USCGS ANNUAL REPORTS FOR FISCAL 1882-3 (SEE MAP # 383U5), 1883-4 (SEE MAP # 384U6), FISCAL 1884-5 (SEE MAP # 385U5) AND 1885-6 (SEE MAP # 386U5).
