DESCRIPTION : THIS SKETCH OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA IS NO. 8 TO ILLUSTRATE THE REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE U.S. COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY SHOWING THE PROGRESS OF THE WORK DURING THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING WITH JUNE, 1879. IT GIVES THE MAJOR AND SECONDARY TRIANGULATION LINES FOR THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND ITS RIVERS. THE SKETCH ALSO SHOWS BY DOTTED LINES THE AERIAL EXTENT OF MORE DETAILED TOPOGRAPHIC AND HYDROGRAPHIC SHEETS, WHICH WERE DONE IN MANUSCRIPT AND NEVER PRINTED AND ISSUED TO THE PUBLIC, WITH THEIR NUMBERS AND DATES OF EXECUTION. ASTRONOMICAL, MAGNETIC, TIDAL AND CURRENT STATIONS IN USE ARE NOTED.

THE ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1879 INDICATES THAT THE ONLY WORK DONE IN THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA DURING THE YEAR WAS A DETAILED SURVEY OF THE SHORES OF THE JAMES RIVER IN THE VICINITY OF RICHMOND (NOT YET COMPLETED AT THE END OF THAT FISCAL YEAR), A SERIES OF TIDAL OBSERVATIONS AT FORTRESS MONROE, VA., AND SOUNDINGS IN THE VICINITY OF AND INVESTIGATION OF OYSTER REEFS IN TANGIER SOUND, POCOMOKE SOUND AND THE JAMES RIVER. TRIANGULATION CONTINUED TO THE WESTWARD IN THE BLUE RIDGE TO THE OHIO RIVER.

THE FOLLOWING CHARTS RECEIVED ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS DURING THE FISCAL YEAR FROM JULY 1, 1878 TO JUNE 30, 1879: COAST CHARTS 31-36, COVERING THE ENTIRE CHESAPEAKE BAY, PLUS HARBOR CHARTS COVERING DELAWARE AND CHESAPEAKE BAYS, PATAPSCO RIVER, 2 CHARTS COVERING THE PATUXENT RIVER, 4 OF THE POTOMAC RIVER, 6 OF THE RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER, YORK RIVER FROM ENTRANCE TO KING'S CREEK, JAMES RIVER FROM CITY POINT TO RICHMOND, AND HAMPTON ROADS AND ELIZABETH RIVER.

DATA IS FROM THE FISCAL 1879 USC&GS ANNUAL REPORT AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : INFORMAL REPORTS WERE MADE ANNUALLY BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COAST SURVEY FROM 1816 THROUGH 1850. THESE WERE PUBLISHED BY THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT AND WERE SENT TO CONGRESS. BEGINNING WITH 1851, THESE PROGRESS REPORTS BECAME MORE FORMAL. THEY WERE PRODUCED IN MUCH LARGER QUANTITY AND WERE MORE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED TO SCHOOLS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN ADDITION TO CONGRESS. THE U.S. COAST SURVEY BECAME THE PUBLISHER BEGINNING IN 1851. THE WIDER DISSEMINATION WAS AN ATTEMPT BY THE AGENCY TO BUILD A WIDER BASE OF SUPPORT FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF THE COAST SURVEY. BEGINNING IN 1844, THESE REPORTS DESCRIBED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL THE PROGRESS OF THE SURVEY INCLUDING IN SECTION III, WHICH PRIMARILY CONSISTED OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE OCEAN FRONT OF DELAWARE, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. ANNUAL PROGRESS SKETCHES WERE APPENDED, SHOWING THE EXTENT OF THE TRIANGULATION, TOPOGRAPHY, HYDROGRAPHY AND OTHER WORK ACCOMPLISHED UP TO THAT TIME.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS TWO COPIES IN GOOD CONDITION ON THIN PAPER, AS DESCRIBED. THEY HAVE ACQ. #s OF A016-HDU AND C015-2U1 AND MDHR #S OF MSA SC1399-289 AND MSA SC1399-458, RESPECTIVELY. A THIRD COPY IS ON THIN PAPER WITH BROWNING AT THE FOLDS.
