THERE ARE MANY LOCAL DETAILS AND NAMES GIVEN, IDENTIFYING RESIDENCES, HOUSES, SCHOOLS, CHURCHES, WAREHOUSES, STORES, RAILROADS, ROADS, AND OTHER PUBLIC BUILDINGS. THE BUSINESS REFERENCE TABLES NAME THE PROPRIETOR AND HIS GOODS AND/OR SERVICES. THESE REFERENCES WERE PAID FOR BY THE BUSINESSMEN. DISTANCES ON THE ROADS ARE IN RODS AT 320 RODS TO THE MILE. THE MAP IS ON PAGES 12 AND 13 OF AN ILLUSTRATED ATLAS OF KENT AND QUEEN ANNE COUNTIES, MARYLAND, PHILADELPHIA: LAKE, GRIFFING & STEVENSON, 1877. THE ATLAS WAS PRINTED BY H. J. TOUDY, 117, 119, AND 121 N. FOURTH STREET, PHILADELPHIA. IT WAS ENGRAVED BY WORLEY & BRACHER, 27 S. 6TH ST., PHILADELPHIA.

MATHEWS NOTES THAT MANY OF THE COUNTY ATLASES OF MARYLAND IN THE 1870S WERE REPRODUCTIONS OF SIMON MARTENET'S WORK, WITH THE AUTHOR'S CONSENT, POSSIBLY ON A ROYALTY BASIS.

D. JACKSON LAKE BECAME A COUNTY ATLAS PUBLISHER IN 1870 AND WAS ONE OF THE COUNTRY'S MOST PROLIFIC. HIS FIRST ATLAS OF A MARYLAND COUNTY WAS OF FREDERICK COUNTY, DONE IN 1873. IN 1877, HIS FIRM, NOW LAKE, GRIFFING & STEVENSON, PUBLISHED ATLASES COVERING 10 COUNTIES IN THE STATE, EIGHT ON THE EASTERN SHORE.

RISTOW STATES THAT LAKE'S ATLASES PRIOR TO 1875 CONTAINED FEW OR NO ILLUSTRATIONS BUT THAT AFTER THAT DATE THEY FOLLOWED THE GENERAL PRACTICE OF HAVING ILLUSTRATIONS OF INDUSTRIAL ESTABLISHMENTS, INTERIORS AND EXTERIORS OF BUSINESSES, FARMSTEADS AND RESIDENCES, PORTRAITS OF LANDOWNERS AND THEIR FAMILIES AND OF OTHER PUBLIC, HISTORIC OR SCENIC PLACES.

DATA IS FROM MATHEWS, PAPENFUSE & COALE AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY OF THIS ATLAS IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
