DESCRIPTION : THIS IS STATE 3 OF USCS CHART 383, FIRST PUBLISHED IN 1849. THIS 1875 STATE IS A MODIFIED BASSO COPY OF PLATE 180 AND WAS GIVEN THE PLATE NUMBER 1275, WITH AIDS TO NAVIGATION UPDATED. FURTHER UPDATINGS OF THIS PLATE OCCURRED IN 1881, 1883, 1884 AND 1895. THERE WAS ALSO A NEW STATE IN 1899. THIS BLACK AND WHITE CHART COVERS FROM KENT ISLAND TO NORTH OF ROCK HALL, MD., INCLUDING THE ENTIRE MOUTH OF THE CHESTER RIVER. MAGNETIC COURSES AND BEARINGS ARE GIVEN AND DISTANCES ARE IN NAUTICAL MILES. SOUNDINGS ARE IN FEET AT MEAN LOW WATER AND ARE EXTREMELY DETAILED. THE CONDITION OF THE BOTTOM IS SHOWN. THIS CHART IS INTERESTING IN THAT IT SHOWS ON LAND IN WHAT DIRECTION THE FIELDS WERE FARMED, INCLUDING HUNTINGFIELD FARM. THIS CHART WAS USED BY THE WICKES COMMISSION TO HELP ESTABLISH THE LOCATION OF AN OLD BOAT YARD DATING BACK TO COLONIAL TIMES.

DATA IS FROM THE NOAA CHART AND PLATE HISTORY CARDS, U.S.C.S. ANNUAL REPORTS TO CONGRESS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE ORIGINAL HAND ENGRAVED PLATE FOR CHART 383 WAS PLATE 180, WHICH WAS BEGUN IN FEBRUARY, 1848 AND COMPLETED IN FEBRUARY, 1849. THIS PLATE WAS USED TO MAKE ALTO AND BASSO COPIES. THE PLATE 181 WAS DONE IN MAY, 1854 AS ELECTROTYPE COPY No. 1, BUT THE PLATE HISTORY CARD INDICATES THAT IT WAS "PROBABLY DESTROYED". ANOTHER BASSO COPY WAS MADE AND CORRECTED TO 1854 AND GIVEN THE PLATE NUMBER 376. THE FINISHED PLATE WAS RECEIVED ON JUNE 26, 1854 AND WAS ELECTROTYPE COPY No. 2 A FURTHER PLATE 1275 WAS MADE FROM ANOTHER BASSO COPY IN 1875. THE AIDS TO NAVIGATION WERE UPDATED TO 1875. SUBSEQUENT PLATE CHANGES IN PLATE 1275 WERE MADE TO UPDATE AIDS TO NAVIGATION IN 1881, 1883, 1884 AND 1895. THE CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHART 383 HAS THE NOTATION THAT THE PLATE LAST APPEARED IN THE CATALOG OF 1897 AS THE EDITION OF 1849. IN APRIL, 1899, PLATE 1275 WAS REISSUED WITH THE CHART STILL DESIGNATED AS # 383. HOWEVER, THAT PLATE AND THE CHART THEREFROM ARE LISTED AS HAVING BEEN CANCELLED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY ON 4/4/99 BY DIRECTION OF THE ASSISTANT IN CHARGE.

ED. 1 - STATE 1 - (1849) - THIS IS THE ORIGINAL HAND ENGRAVED PLATE 180, USED FROM 1849 TO 1854 AND FROM WHICH ALTO AND BASSO COPIES WERE MADE. THE TOP MARGIN HAS ONLY ONE NOTATION AND THAT IS ON THE LEFT SIDE. IT READS "No. 383". SEE CHART # 349U5.

A COPY WAS SEEN AT THE NOAA DISTRIBUTION CENTER ARCHIVES. SEE CHART # 399U5.

SUBSEQUENTLY A PHOTOLITH PLATE WAS MADE AND IN FEBRUARY, 1912, A FIRST EDITION UNDER CHART NO. 548 COVERING THIS AREA WAS ISSUED. A SECOND EDITION OF THIS SAME CHART NUMBER WAS MADE ON JUNE 1, 1934 WITH AN INSET OF KENT ISLAND NARROWS ON A SCALE OF 1:10,000 WITH 1927 DATUM. SOME 22 EDITIONS WERE ISSUED THROUGH APRIL 21, 1984 WITH EVEN MORE FREQUENT PRINTS. ON JULY 1, 1974 THE CHART NUMBER WAS CHANGED TO 12272 WHEN THE NATIONAL OCEAN SURVEY CHANGED ITS NUMBERING SYSTEM.

DATA IS FROM THE NOAA CHART HISTORY CARD FOR CHARTS 383, 548 AND 12272, FROM A TELEPHONE CONVERSATION WITH BOB HANSEN OF NOAA, WHO READ DATA FROM THE PLATE HISTORY CARDS, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
