DESCRIPTION : THIS GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS MAP OF MARYLAND IS BASED, IN ITS GEOLOGICAL DATA, ON THE PHILIP TYSON MAP OF 1859 ENTITLED "GEOLOGICAL ILLUSTRATIONS ACCOMPANYING THE FIRST REPORT OF PHILIP T. TYSON AGRICULTURAL-CHEMIST OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND 1859". THE DATA IS SUPERIMPOSED ON A DIFFERENT BASE MAP OF MARYLAND, WITH A DIFFERENT SCALE AND WITH CONSIDERABLY ENHANCED DETAIL OF NAMES, RAILROADS, ETC. THE THREE GEOLOGICAL SECTIONS SHOWN IN THE LOWER LEFT ARE SIMILAR. THE 1859 MAP IS DESCRIBED BY MATHEWS AS THE FIRST DETAILED GEOLOGICAL MAP OF THE ENTIRE STATE. THIS 1873 MAP APPEARS ON PAGES 14 AND 15 OF MARTENET, WALLING & GRAY'S NEW TOPOGRAPHICAL ATLAS OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, BALTIMORE: STEDMAN, BROWN & LYON, 1873. IT IS ACCOMPANIED BY AN ESSAY ON "GEOLOGY", WHICH APPEARS ON PAGES 12, 13, AND 16. PAGE 13, COVERING GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS 13 THROUGH 21 IS ON THE REVERSE SIDE OF PAGE 14. THE REVERSE SIDE OF PAGE 15 CONTAINS GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS 23 AND 24 AND THE BEGINNING OF AN ESSAY ON ZOOLOGY. THE GEOLOGY ESSAY IS LISTED AS BEING "PRINCIPALLY FROM REPORTS AND DOCUMENTS OF PHILIP T. TYSON, ESQ. LATE STATE AGRICULTURAL CHEMIST."

DATA IS FROM MATHEWS, PAPENFUSE AND COALE, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE 1873 ATLAS IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
